چکیده

The impact of submarine hydrothermal systems on organic carbon in the ocean—one largest fixed reservoirs Earth—could be profound. Yet, different vent sites show diverse fluid chemical compositions and subsequent biological responses. Observations from various are to evaluate systems' ocean cycle. A response cruise May 2009 an on-going eruption at West Mata Volcano, northeast Lau Basin, provided opportunity quantify matter production a back-arc spreading system. Hydrothermal fluids contained elevated dissolved carbon, particulate (POC), nitrogen (PN) relative background seawater. δ13C-POC values for suspended particles diffuse (−15.5‰ −12.3‰) distinct those seawater (−23 ± 1‰), indicative unique synthesis pathways microbes counterparts. first concentrations reported vents were similar or higher than Enhanced fixation denitrification removed 37%–89% total recharging flow paths. plume samples enriched POC PN, indicating enhanced production. “dark” within matches thermodynamic prediction based available reducing substances supplied plume. This research combines measured contents with modeled results demonstrates importance activities water column deep ocean.

Hydroacoustic investigationof submarine landslides at West Mata volcano, Lau Basin

Submarine landslides are an important process in volcano growth yet are rarely observed and poorly understood. We show that landslides occur frequently in association with the eruption of West Mata volcano in the NE Lau Basin. These events are identifiable in hydroacoustic data recorded between ~5 and 20 km from the volcano and may be recognized in spectrograms by the weak and strong powers at ...

Morphotypes of virus-like particles in two hydrothermal vent fields on the East Scotia Ridge, Antarctica

Viruses from extreme environments are still largely unexplored and may harbor unseen genetic potential. Here, we present a first glance at the morphological diversity of virus like particles (VLPs) from an environment that is extreme in more than one respect: two recently discovered hydrothermal vent fields on the East Scotia Ridge in the Southern Ocean near Antarctica. They are the southernmos...

Hydrothermal vent ecosystems and representative hyperthermophilic microorganisms

One of the most spectacular events of the present century, concerning all biological and environmental disciplines, was the discovery of deep-sea hydrothermal vents around the Galapagos Islands, during the late 1970s. This remarkable scientific accomplishment was achieved thanks to the extensive work carried out by oceanographers and geologists. A significant role in terms of scientific support...

The hydrothermal vent bivalve Bathymodiolus azoricus

Hydrothermal environments are characterised by high metal concentrations related to interactions of the convective seawater circulation with basaltic rocks inside the ocean crust. Thus, hydrothermal fluids are enriched with, among other toxic metals, mercury (Hg) that becomes bioavailable to vent macro invertebrates and that may determine development of specialised defence mechanisms. Unusually...

Pathways for abiotic organic synthesis at submarine hydrothermal fields.

Arguments for an abiotic origin of low-molecular weight organic compounds in deep-sea hot springs are compelling owing to implications for the sustenance of deep biosphere microbial communities and their potential role in the origin of life. Theory predicts that warm H2-rich fluids, like those emanating from serpentinizing hydrothermal systems, create a favorable thermodynamic drive for the abi...
